The Myth
It's about the 'Nix Roses' in the forest of Triveden. They are actually red hued water lilies, but they are unique to the area and got their name through a Nix's intervention in an old legend. A desperate fisherman strikes a deal with a Nix: in trade for good catches to support his family he offers his daughter to the Nix. When the girl turns 18 she goes to meet with the sea being, but rather than going to his watery abode she kills herself, plunging a knife deep into her chest. Her blood seeps into the lilies, staining them red.

Commentary
Following a previous piece, a Guided Meditation, I went for a very contained piece that is surrounded by its elements and tells a story without need of words. It took many a scrapped draft to get to this point, but once I had the final choice picked out it flowed out very quickly and nicely. I gave everything a curvy and gentle flow and tried to avoid using too many harsh angles. Despite the subject matter of the Nix being a male, I gave him more androgynous features to match with the curves and delicateness of the lilies and roots. He, himself, is rooted to the water, forever bound to it with the lilies as his only companion among the lonely waters.

What a sad story. :c

But the piece is beautiful. I love how the red accents the sepia-ish background.
